Mahrez
Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, has been named English player of the year by the Professional Footballers’ Association. Reuters has reported.
The 25-year-old Algerian international is the first Leicester player, as well as the first African to get the recognition.
Mahrez has had a magnificent season in Leicester fairy-tale campaign. Scoring 17 times and making 11 assists in 34 league games to cement his club’s place at the top of the Premiership.
Mahrez pushed away fellow Leicester players – Jamie Vardy and N’Golo Kante, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet for the award.
The Algerian applauded the contribution of his team mates and manager Claudio Ranieri.
“All the credit is for them, seriously,” Reuters quoted Mahrez, who joined Leicester from French second-tier side Le Havre in January.
Mahrez also spoke of his pride of being the first African player to win the award. It was won last year by Chelsea playmaker, Eden Hazard.
