Suspected Agatu Youths kill 20 persons, 83 cows in Nasarawa

Gunmen kill 20 persons, 83 cows in Nasarawa

Because the Federal Government is not doing enough to secure lives and property across the country, it does appear that people are now taking the law into their hands as youths suspected to be on reprisal mission killed 20 people and 83 cows over the weekend at Adayi in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, The Nation Reports.

Armed Youths at the weekend killed 83 cows at Adayi in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The killings are suspected to be reprisals by youths who crossed over from Benue State.

The Fulani leader of Adayi area, Mallam Bideri Ahmadu, alleged that suspected Agatu gunmen from Benue State might be behind the killings. The same view is shared by the traditional ruler of Loko, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Sabo. Security agencies are already investigating.

The Loko Fulani community leader, Bideri Ahmadu addressed newsmen and said that Agatu youths crossed over from Benue State at about 10:30am last Saturday. “They had wanted to rustle the cows in their boats across River Benue, but the cattle went berserk because of sporadic shootings.”

He said: “Upon realising they could not achieve their aim, the Agatu youths opened fire on the cows, killing 83. The injured ones are in the bush.”

The Mai Loko, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Sabo, hinted that over 20 men, women and children were killed during attacks on Fulani people by Agatu youths from Benue State in the past weeks. He called for more security because as he said the area has only two police officers, who don’t even have rifles.

Sabo however  urged the Fulani not to retaliate because the government is looking into the crisis.

Nasarawa Police spokesman, Ismaila Numan confirmed the killings and said investigation had started.
