Posturing Continues In Edo Ahead of APC Primaries- Assembly Speaker Impeached

The new Speaker, Ativie

As the political posturing continues ahead of the APC party primaries sometime in June, the Speaker of Edo House of Assembly, Victor Edoro has been impeached today by 16 of the 24 members of the House of Assembly, NAN reports.

In his place, the lawmakers voted Elizabeth Ativie as the new Speaker. She is the first woman speaker of Edo State.

The motion to remove Edoro was moved by majority leader,Folly Ogedemgbe (APC-Owan- East) and seconded by Patrick Illuobe (PDP – Esan-North East).

Chaos however greeted the assumption of office by Ativie as thugs immediately invaded the chambers and the Assembly staff scurried for safety.

The situation was however brought under control and security forces took over control of the premises.

Recall that the Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole and his deputy, Dr Obudu have engaged in war of words over claim by the governor that his deputy contracted juju priest to kill him and the later claim by his deputy that he escaped assassination at the APC party headquarters in Auchi.

Oshiomhole is not supporting Obudu’s ambition to succeed him. This has strained relationship between the two.

Meanwhile, the removed speaker maintains that he remains speaker, arguing that only 11 lawmakers participated in the “illegal” impeachment.
