The Kaduna State Government yesterday shoved another bunch of 91 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) into the Kaduna High Court. It sought the death sentence for all of the accused.

This adds to the 50 arraigned on April 21 on same charges of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disturbance of public peace and wrongful restrain.

The prosecutor, Dari Bayero told the court that the accused persons were being charged “pursuant to Sections 97, 102, 106, 221 and 256 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State.”
According to a NAN report, 256 other Shiites arrested by the army are also confronted with charges that attract the death sentence. But 10 others are facing lesser charges in various courts in Kaduna State.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army is facing grave criticism for killing over 300 Shiites in northern Zaria last December. Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused the army of killing and quickly burying the bodies of at least 300 Shia Muslims in an unjustified attack.

This was confirmed by the Shi’a group, Islamic Movement in Nigeria, which said that over 300 hundred  of its members were killed and secretly buried by soldiers during that clash.
