President Muhammadu Buhari is not amused with the blowing up of Chevron’s platform in Warri, Delta State. He has therefore ordered the military to demolish the new militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers. The group has been destroying oil installations.
Accoding to SUNDAY PUNCH, Buhari gave the order on Friday following the group’s attack on Chevron’s platform and blowing up of pipelines connecting Warri and Kaduna refineries.
As a result of the attack on Okan offshore production platform, Chevron through spokeswoman, Isabel Ordonez, claims it has lost about 105,000 barrels of oil in three days. That is about 35,000 barrels per day or about 15 per cent of its output in Nigeria. This was confirmed by General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs,Deji Haastrup.
“This is a very difficult time for the country because it needs the revenue it can get from oil production. Incidents such as this have the potential to impact that. We do hope that it does not seriously affect the country,” he said.
An aide to the president said, “the President gave special instruction to the military, especially to the Chief of Naval Staff, that this ugly development of vandals in the Niger Delta should end immediately.”
The order was confirmed by the Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. -Gen. Rabe Abubakar.“We have the order from the President and we are monitoring the activities of the new group. All efforts will be made to bring out those behind it.”
Buhari had in April threatened to descend heavily on oil and gas pipelines vandals and saboteurs the same way the military is handling the Boko Haram sect.
