Sunderland escape relegation again as Newcastle and Norwich drop

Northeast club, Sunderland reignited a traditional last-minute magic as they walloped Everton 3-0 last night at the Stadium of Light and again escaped relegation at the last moment for the fourth consecutive season.

It also guaranteed their staying in the Premier for the 10th consecutive season.

That victory pushed down Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle and Norwich to the second division, despite Norwich’s 4-2 thrashing of Watford.

Those at Newcastle must be ruing the opportunity lost last weekend at Villa Park when the Magpies failed to beat a lowly Aston Villa to improve their chances of staying top-flight.

After northeast bitter rivals, Sunderland won to send Newcastle to relegation, Newcastle’s managing director issued an apology to the fans, saying how devastated and truly sorry they are.

“Tonight we are devastated at our relegation from the Premier League, as I know every single person connected to this football club will be,” said managing director Lee Charnley in a statement on the club’s website.
“I want to thank all of the fans for the support you have shown for the club you love throughout the season, in spite of this massive disappointment and underachievement.

“Your support throughout has been magnificent, but I want to pay particular thanks for the incredible backing you have given to Rafa (Benitez) and the team during the latter part of the season.
