Liverpool challenge Sevilla in the Europa League final in Basel tonight for the Europa League Cup and a place in the group stage of next season’s Champions League.
Despite an uninspiring domestic campaign, Europe league defending champions, FC Sevilla remain strong in Europe.
They will be aiming to make history by winning the cup for the third consecutive season. They finished seventh in La Liga after becoming the only team in Europe’s top five leagues that failed to win a single away game.
However this final appearance guarantees the team European qualification – even if they lose in Basel against Liverpool. And manager, Unai Emery is very optimistic. “We are winners, we are the champions and we have the possibility to defend our title.
“Sevilla does not fail when we are really focused.
“This is an opportunity to play in a third final and win it to change history and to have our names recorded forever and ever is very motivating,” the 44-year-old Spaniard added, saying in any case that Liverpool, which is one of the top 10 clubs in the world, cannot be underrated. But he refused to be frightened by Liverpool huge travelling fans expected to be noisy at St. Jakob Park.
On Liverpool’s side, winning the Europe League will secure a place in next season’s Champions League group stage. However, they will be without a taste of Europe for the second time in three years if they lose. The reds finished eighth in the Premier League despite a late season surge in winning ways.
The setting provides Liverpool’s manager Juergen Klopp a great opportunity to end his debut season in Anfield in fabulous style – barely five months after leaving Borussia Dortmund. He had replaced the sacked Brendan Rodgers last October.
“I came here because I was really convinced about the qualities of these players and this squad, despite the doubts people had.”
“To see how they have reached this final gives me a really good feeling.
“I am really happy they can show how strong they are and it is a big opportunity to make the final step this season and achieve something,” Klopp added.
Interestingly, both clubs have never met before in Europe. And both Sevilla and Liverpool have won all its Europa League/UEFA Cup finals – Sevilla, 4 and Liverpool, 3.
