The President of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Justice Babatunde Adeniran Ademjumo yesterday scandalously granted an interim order restraining the Nigeria Labor Congress from embarking on indefinite strike slated for today to protest a hike in the price of petrol.
This decision is not supported by commonsense or jurisprudence. It is further evidence that the Judiciary under the present dispensation is compromising. The reliefs sought by the Federal Government were predicated on unfounded fear that there will be a breakdown of law and order.
Even if they government were correct, that worst case scenario could be prevented by the same government by making concessions and not by running to a friendly court to pervert the course of democracy.
The right of protest is an integral ingredient of democracy. Stifling of this right is a trait of fascist regimes.
