The Zika virus responsible for neurological disorders and birth abnormalities in Brazil has spread to Africa for the first time, Reuters has reported.

This was confirmed to the World Health Organisation (WHO) after tests in Cape Verde.

Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Africa Director, said the findings are of concern because it is proof that the outbreak is spreading beyond South America and now on the doorstep of Africa.

She said the information would help African countries to re-acess their level of risk and adapt and increase their levels of preparedness.

Moeti however said she would not recommend strict travel restrictions in order to stop the spread of the disease.
