President Muhammadu Buhari and his APC co-travelers rode to power on the promise of change. But after one year in power, there are no much indications that the president & Co will keep their promise.
Again, on May 14, while Buhari was carried away with the moment, as he enjoyed the spotlight during the Anti-corruption Summit in London, the president made another promise that he will give Nigerians a democracy day present by naming those who looted their treasury and sabotaged the march towards statehood.
May 29 came and Buhari read a long speech and at the end failed to give Nigerians the names. He however, said he had directed the Ministry of Information to commence publication of the details. “Full details of the status and categories of the assets will now be published by the Ministry of Information and updated periodically. When forfeiture formalities are completed these monies will be credited to the treasury and be openly and transparently used in funding developmental projects and the public will be informed,” the president said.
He then unleashed his image makers and those who think there job is to package the brand Buhari (rather than tell Nigerians the truth). Their task was to calm Nigerians down with the argument that the lot fell on Information minister, Lai Mohammed to make such a disclosure. They promised that it will happen on Wednesday or at the latest. This came from Shehu Garba, a media aide to Buhari. He said this on a Sunday.
In his exact words “The President is true to his words. He has done what he has promised. He has given directive that the information be put out by the Ministry of Information. Records will be obtained from the CBN and the investigation agencies regarding recovery and seizures, and actual status with regard to frozen sums in banks and assets held wherever they are.”
Shehu added: “Going forward, he has asked them to update the information periodically. ” The minister should be ready with this when work resumes, possibly Wednesday or Thursday #HappyDemocracyDay”
However, as at midnight on yesterday (Thursday), that promise was again broken. And there are no signs that the looters will be revealed this week, or ever at all.
