World No.1, Serena Williams of United States lost to Spanish Grabine Muguruza in three sets 5-7, 4-6 to once again fail in her bid to equal Germany’s Steffi Graf’s record of a career 22 Grand Slam titles.
After missing on two last occasions in the US and Australian Opens, Williams failed again to realise her sporting dream. It would have been her fourth french Open triumph after winning in 2002, 2013 and 2015.
It is Muguruza’s first Grand Slam title. Before today’s match, Muguruza, had lost three of her four previous matches against Williams.

Muguruza, with the win, will now become the world number two behind Williams. The new French Open champion started playing tennis at the age of 3 in Caracas, Venezuela, where she was born. Her parents moved over with her to Spain while she was just six.
Williams defeated her in the Wimbledon final in 2015 6-4, 6-4 and had then consoled her by saying that Muguruza’s should not worry, that her time would surely come. That time finally came today, but little did Serena know then that it would come at her expense and deny her the 22nd Grand Slam title she longs for.
Muguruza is the second Spanish woman since Aranches Sanchez Vicario defeated Monica Seles in the 1998 French Open final, to win a tennis Grand Slam title.
