The Nigeria Police Force has brought embarrassment and shame onto the Nigerian nation with its illegal policy of weeding job applicants with tattoos on their body.
The Police Command in Enugu yesterday said that persons with tattoo on their bodies would be disqualified from participating in the ongoing nationwide recruitment into the force.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Ebere Amaraizu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the measure was part of the rules for the recruitment.
He further said procedures for the screening had been put in place by the police authorities and that those that were shortlisted for the interview had been communicated through their email addresses.
“Over aged people, tattooed persons, falsified results, statement of results over five years and people with some physical impediments will be disqualified from the exercise,” Amaraizu said.
Checkpointcharley is amused that a police force that is supposed to enforce the law can go public and break the laws of the land with smug. They only ended up embarrassing themselves and bringing shame on the nation.
The discrimination against those with tattoo is unconstitutional and unacceptable. It also makes no sense. I fail to see what obstacles a tattooed police officer would have in the discharges of his duties.
This is why I will ask all those with tattoo, who were illegally rejected, to seek legal redress.
We as Nigeria aspire to live in freedom like all civilized people of the world. And in pursuit of that freedom, everyone has the constitutional right to decide how he wants to live his life, including embracing any lifestyle that appeals to him, in so far as it does not infringe on the rights of other law abiding citizens or pose a threat to state security.
