The Nigerian Army has done some internal weeding in its bid to restore professionalism to the force. As a result, some senior officers of the Nigerian Army have been slammed with unexpected retirement due to corruption and lack of professionalism.

A statement released by the acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, on Saturday, said the retirement was confirmed at the meeting of the Army council on Thursday.

He did not disclose the number of officers affected, but said the retirement was based on service exigencies.

“The Army wishes to inform the general public that quite a number of senior officers of the Nigerian Army were retired from service yesterday.

“Those retired were mainly some major-generals, brigadiers-general, colonels, lieutenant-colonels and a major.

“Their retirement was based on service exigencies,’’ the statement said.

It recalled that not too long ago some officers were investigated for partisanship during the 2015 general elections. Usman added that the retirements were connected with the investigation by the Presidential Committee scrutinizing defence contracts.

According to him, some officers had already been arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Usman emphasised that the military must remain apolitical and professional at all times.
