Contrary to the official version of the Nigerian Army that it is weeding the Army of corrupt and unprofessional officers in the retiring of about 200 officers, indications are emerging that the Nigerian Army may have, with the mass retirement, undertaken ethnic and religious cleansing within the force.
Investigation carried out show the majority of those affected are from the South and the ones from the North are mainly Christians. This has shocked the rank and file of the Army. Sources say that the senior officers were unceremoniously shown the door – with most of them turning up for work on Friday, as usual, only to be handed their retirement letters as approved by the Army council.
Most of those affected had held operational positions in the army, sensitive positions during the 2015 elections or were involved in arms procurement, who may have been indicted by the Chief of Army Staff’s Committee that investigated arms, logistics and other procurements dating back to the tenure of former COAS, Generals Owoye Azazi, Abdurahman Dambazau, Azubuike Ihejirika and KTJ Minimah.
