The former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi has lambasted state governors for inprudence and extravagant lifestyles. He says this is the major reason why they have problem paying workers their wages.

Obi insists that all Nigerian states are capable of paying salaries. According to him all they needed are prudence and prioritizing, so as to enable them pay salaries and engage in other developmental projects.

He spoke yesterday at the 17th Annual Convention of the Igbo Youth Movement at the Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu. Obi, who bagged the ‘Best Governor Ever,’ award regretted that those in government wasted much money on things that were not necessary and then run out of funds for projects that would enrich the people.

He used himself as an example. Obi said that when he was governor, he did not keep guest houses, charter planes, travel with more people than necessary, fly Business Class or use bullet proof vehicles, etc.

The interesting thing about states owing salaries is that the state governors and their numerous aides are never owed. They promptly pay themselves but feel at ease to withhold the salaries of others, who have families and children.
