Ten MASSOB members arrested without justification as Police continues clampdown

Two weeks after the killing of several pro-Biafra protesters by security forces on Biafra Day, the clampdown on the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) members continues as ten members of the pro-Biafra group were yesterday arrested in Cross River State, Vanguard reports.

MASSOB spokesman in the State, Okon Archibong, told the newspaper that the State Coordinator of the group, Samuel Okah along with nine others, whose names were given as Shedrack Chinelo, Chief Joseph Ekperebi, Michael Adah, James Ekeme, Adah Johnson were arrested in Ikom and Ogoja on Monday night and detained at the Ikom police station.

“We have not had any other activity outside the May 30th commemoration of Biafra Anniversary Day but last night Police from Ikom Division went to the home our State Coordinator, Samuel Okah and nine other persons and arrested them”.

He said the police did not give any reason for the arrests. “They were taken to the Ikom Police station and detained there without giving any reason for their arrest” According to him, during the May 30th Biafra Day anniversary, the Cross River members of MASSOB only had a peaceful march in accordance to the directives of Ralph Uwazurike, who had ordered a non-violent march.

“I have gone to see them at the Ikom police station this morning and they are in the cell and I asked what offence they committed because during our anniversary march, we did not engage in any confrontation with anybody or group, not even with the police”.

Cross River State Police Command public relations officer, John Eluu feigned ignorance over the arrests when contacted. “Call me later let me call the DPO Ikom to find out what is going on there,” he Said
