Voting is underway in the United Kingdom in a historic referendum on whether the United Kingdom should leave or stay in the European Union.
Citizens rattled by an early drizzle clutched umbrellas as they queued up at the polls in defiance of the soft rain.

A record number of people, about 46.5 million, are registered to vote in what has been termed the once-in-a generation vote.
Registered voters include Britons from England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar – a British territory off the southern coast of Spain.

What they have to decide is simply: Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?

Opinion Polls indicate a tight vote. The results are expected later today. Once the results trickle in, they will be announced by region rather than by constituency. The 12 regions comprise Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, London and eight English regions.

The referendum had claimed the life of a pro-Europe parliamentarian, Jo Cox. She was killed this last week in a brazen attack on a street in her district in northern England.
