Policemen and hungry soldiers today engaged in a shootout at the Maiduguri Government House, Borno state over quarrel arising from rice distribution. Trouble started when soldiers in a truck attempted to forcefully get a share of the rice being distributed to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who are not living in camps in the state, Daily Trust reports.

The distribution of rice for the IDPs had started from about a week ago under the watch of policemen in the Government House who are to ensure that the rice is given only to the people it was intended for.
Sources alleged that the soldiers had been coming to get a piece of the action since when the distribution started without being entitled to it.

But when the hungry soldiers surfaced today, the policemen refused to let it be business as usual. Due to poor training and wrong mindset, a shootout followed leaving, at least, one policeman injured.
At the moment, the policemen are holding two soldiers at the second gate of the government house, while their soldier colleagues are at the first trying to rescue them.
