Four days after brexiting the European Union, a dispirited and mostly inexperienced England national team have also brexited the 2016 European Championship after a 1-2 loss in Nice to Iceland, a nation of about 300,000 people.
Despite going ahead early in the 4th minute through a Wayne Rooney penalty, Iceland fought back to immediately equalise two minutes later, with Ragnar Sigurdsson scoring, before the Three Lions could savour their lead. Kolbeinn Sigthorsson made it 2-1 in the 19th minute and Iceland held on till the final whistle.
The defeat is one of the most bitter in the history of English football and also one of the most sensational victories in European football.
It is the first time Iceland will get this far in a major tournament.
England is still chasing a major title since the world cup triumph on home soil in 1966.
