North-East Nigeria is undergoing a crisis of monumental proportion. It is a humanitarian crisis. Millions of men, women and children are trapped in camps not fit for animals and are literary starving to death.
These victims of the Boko Haram crisis have now become victims of the Nigerian State. The corruption woven deep into Nigeria’s fabric is killing them.
Our IDP’s (Internally displaced people) are dying before our eyes but we shrug and keep quiet.
It shouldn’t be like this. Billions have been budgeted to take care of their needs. Food and materials are meant to be provided by Government to feed and clothe the IDP’s. Donor agencies have donated generously. But that money is stolen. The food is stolen. There are evil men and women growing fat from stealing from this vulnerable citizens.
Young girls are selling their bodies for food for their families or are being sexually exploited. Children are dying of malnutrition. Babies are becoming gaunt skeletons as they slowly starve to death.
This cannot, and must not be allowed to go on. The House of Representatives has set up an investigation into how and why donor aid is being diverted. That is not good enough. We cannot wait for another committee that will take months to deliver a report that will never be implemented.
This is an urgent cry to President Buhari’s govt to deal with this as an urgent humanitarian crisis. The looting and stealing of food meant for the IDPs must cease. IF Nigerians cannot be trusted not to steal from the needy, then let us acknowledge our shame and call upon foreign aid agencies to be involved in the running of the camps.
The most vulnerable Nigerians deserve to be rescued now.
