Theresa May has been confirmed as the new leader of Britain’s conservative party. She will replace David Cameron, who steps down on Wednesday, as Prime Minister.

She will become British second female Prime Minister to occupy 10 Downing Street after the late Margareth Thatcher.

The road was cleared by the dropping of her closest rival, Andrea Leadsom today after her claim that she, with children, was better positioned to be prime minister than childless May, backfired.

Born on 1 October 1956, May is a member of parliament (MP) and has been Home Secretary since 2010.
