Theresa May has been formally appointed the new British Prime Minister after a brief meeting with Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace after the Queen accepted the resignation of David Cameron. May left Buckingham Palace as Britain’s second female prime minister, after paying the traditional visit to the Queen to be invited to form a government.
Renowned as a tough negotiator her first task would be to negotiate the United Kingdom out if the European Union after the BREXIT vote.
May was formerly a member of parliament (MP) and Home Secretary under the government of David Cameron.
“I have just been to Buckingham Palace, where Her Majesty, The Queen asked me to form a government and I accepted,” she said as she later spoke in front of 10 Downing Street. May hailed her predecessor, who she described as a modern prime minister and promised to follow in his footsteps, and carry on his fight against social injustice.
May promised that the government she will lead will be one for the poor and not for the reach. She also assured that Britain will rise to the challenges ahead.
