London club, Arsenal are gradually becoming unattractive for big football players. After losing out in their bid to sign Leicester’s Jamie Vardy and Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli, Arsenal have again lost the race to sign their next target, Julian Draxler. His Bundesliga club, Wolfsburg have told the Gunners that he is “100% certain” to stay with the club.
Wenger has been a long-term admirer of the German international and he has been on his list as he tries to strengthen his side against improved rivals. In a dramatic U-turn, Wolfsburg have categorically ruled out Julian Draxler leaving the club this summer – after an initial willingness to lay him off for cash since they failed to qualify for champions league.
A £55m fee was touted for the player, who is still under contract until 2020.
However, Sporting Director, Klaus Allofs now insists that Draxler will not be moving.
“The situation with Draxler is 100 per cent certain that he will be staying at Wolfsburg,” he told Sport1.
“There is no discussing that.”
Arsenal badly need a striker after Leicester’s Jamie Vardy earlier turned down a chance to go to Emirates. Draxler, who had a good outing at the just concluded EURO 2016, would have been an option as Wenger attempts to solve his attacking problems. Now, barely one month to start of the new season, he will have to continue the search.
Recall that Arsenal tried to sign Draxler while he was still at Schalke. They enquired in the summer of 2013 before signing Mesut Ozil. Again they made another move in January 2014 but felt then that the price was unreasonable.
