The government of President Muhammadu Buhari may have taken a placating step aimed at ending the bombing of oil facilities in the Niger Delta. The Federal Government has announced that former Niger Delta militants will start receiving their stipends from today, Monday, August 1.

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig-Gen. Paul Boroh (retd), disclosed this on Sunday.

This was made know in statement released yesterday by the Head of the Media and Communication Department of the office of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Abuja, Mr. Piriye Keyaramo.

The statement appealed to the ex-militants in the region to abort the planned protests scheduled to hold today.

Boroh said, “President Buhari attaches so much importance to the Amnesty Programme, which explains why the President in his inaugural address to the nation specifically promised to invest heavily in the projects, and programmes currently in place for the ex-agitators in the region.”

He added that the Federal Government planned to enhance the amnesty programme for the benefit of the 30,000 ex-militants and other youths in the region.

“President Muhammandu Buhari, is already putting together a youth development and empowerment package that would directly impact the ex-agatators and other youths in the region.”
