KNOCKED OUT: Serena Williams
There was a big upset in the Olympic tennis tournament as World No 1 and defending champion, Serena Williams crashed out in the third round of the women’s singles.
The American appeared she had a shoulder problem and was close to tears as she lost 6-4, 6-3 to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. It ended the dream of the 22 grand slams winner of another Olympic gold.
Serena and sister Venus are the most successful players in Olympic tennis history with four gold medals each but Rio has been kind to the Williams sisters. Both were knocked out in the first round of doubles.
