Monica Puig played a match of her life to beat Germany’s Angelique Kerber 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to win the ladies tennis event and hand her country its first ever Olympics gold medal.
After eliminating two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 on Friday, she completed her surprising run in Rio by demolishing Kerber in the final.
Ranked 34 in the world, Monica Puig played almost like a robot, playing perfectly to overcome the resistance put up by the Australian Open champion in the final set after she luckily won the second set.
Kerber simply had no answers to her opponent’s confidence and dominance.
Puig is now the first person to ever win an Olympic gold medal for Puerto Rico.
It is her first ever Olympics and the girl from the Island country had written on her Facebook page that she had dreamed of playing in the Olympics as a little girl. Now she has topped her dream by winning gold.
