World No.1 Serena Williams of the United States has cruised past Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 6-2, 6-3 to qualify for the quarter-final of the US Open to stay on course for her 7th title at Flushing Meadows and 23rd grand slam triumph.

The Wimbledon champion was hardly troubled by her 52nd ranked opponent, who failed to get a break-ball throughout the game. Actually, she only had to worry about her unforced errors. And she took her first match-ball at 5-3 to set up a clash against Romania’s Simone Halep, who dismissed Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro in two straight sets, on Wednesday for a semi-final place.

It is Serena’s 308th grand slam win in her career. She has now surpassed Roger Federer who has won 307.
