Serena Williams gave the best response to all the talks of her losing her world number one position by defeating Romania’s Simona Halep 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to retain her position and qualify for the semifinal of the US Open.
The six-time US champion fired 18 aces and 50 winners to subdue the Romanian in a keenly contested match to move a step closer to her 23rd Grand Slam singles title, which will see her surpass Germany’s Steffi Graf, who had won 22 in the open era.
Serena will now face Czech 10th seed Karolina Pliskova in the semi-finals on Friday.
