New World No1 Angelique Kerber of Germany put some colours to her new crown by winning her second Grand Slam title of the year, subduing hard-hitting Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to win the US Open.
At 3-1 in the third, it had looked like Pliskova would become the second Czech woman since Jana Novotna (Wimbledon) in 1998 to win a Grand Slam. But Kerber rallied back and forced a re-break to level scores at 3-3. From that moment, she left no one in doubt as to who was in charge as she navigated her way to her second Grand Slam trophy of the year after winning the Australian Open.
Talking after the game during trophy presentation, Kerber, who fought back tears, said winning two majors in 2016 makes it the best year of her career.
“As a little girl, I had dreamed of becoming world number one and this year I won two Grand Slam titles and it is special to win the second in New York.
“On Monday, I will become the world number one; all my dreams came true this year.”
