Former U.S Secretary of State, Colin Powell has described Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump as “national disgrace and an international pariah,” in a June email that was leaked on Tuesday.
Powell in his leaked e-mails also slammed Trump as racist, CNN reports.
The former secretary of state said Trump is an embarrassing figure to represent the United States.
“Trump is a national disgrace and an international pariah,” Powell wrote in June in an email.
“He appeals to the worst angels of the GOP nature and poor white folks,” he wrote in another.
The messages, the existences of which were first reported by BuzzFeed and The Intercept, were posted to DCleaks, an organization affiliated with other recent hacks of high-profile figures.
Powell, a retired four-star general who was US Secretary of State during the beginning of George W. Bush’s presidency, hasn’t endorsed Trump and has mostly dodged questions about his thoughts on the controversial GOP nominee.
The leak also shows that Powell criticised Trump’s lack of outreach to black voters, saying “there is nothing he can say” to convince black Americans to give him their votes, he said, criticizing the birther movement.
“He takes us for idiots,” Powell wrote.
“He can never overcome what he tried to do to Obama with his search for the birth certificate … the whole birther movement was racist.”
In July Powell had written that the Republican presidential primaries had “gone into the mud”.
