The Rule of Law was rubbished in the wee hours of today when operatives of the Department of State Service simultaneously invaded the houses of two Justices of the Supreme Court – Justices Walter Onnoghen and Sylvester Ngwuta – as well as two judges of the Federal High Court, Justices Adeniyi Ademola and Nnamdi Dimgba, Punch reports.
The DSS operatives surrounded the judicial officers’ houses in Judicial Quarters, Abuja for hours before they eventually broke in at about 1am on Saturday.
After searching the houses, the security agents eventually took Justice Ademola away at about 5am on Saturday, the newspaper has reported.
It is alleged that DSS men beat up Justice Dimgba’s brother during the operation.
Close colleagues of the judges have confirmed that the security agents presented search warrants of doubtful authenticity with incorrect names.
The reasons for the invasion are yet to be known as the DSS has not been reached for comment.
Recall that Justices Ademola and Dimgba have both ordered the release of suspects in the custody of the DSS, but security agency, which is becoming more lawless under Buhari’s watch, did not comply with the orders.
Also on Friday in Gombe, men of the security agency arrested Justice Muazu Pindiga, who was the first chairman of the Rivers State Election Petition Tribunal. Though he was removed midway into the hearing of the case concerning the 2015 governorship election in the state.
