President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed that his media aide, Garba Shehu, as pointed out by Checkpointcharley, misrepresented issues when he claimed that the president was only joking when he said his wife belonged in the kitchen.
Buhari has insisted that his wife, Aisha belongs to the kitchen and should stay out of politics – not remembering however how she had been of tremendous help during the 2015 Presidential election campaign.
Buhari said he meant what he said when he talked to German media, Deutsche Welle (German Waves).
“I am sure you have a house. You know where your kitchen is. You know where your living room is. And I believe your wife looks after all that even if she’s working.” Buhari said to his interviewer, Phil Gayle, who asked him to clarify his comments, which went viral in social media.
This contradicts the attempt by by his media aide, Garba Shehu, who tried to water down the comments, adjudged to be disrespectful of women.
Mr. Shehu had claimed: “My friends, can’t a leader get a sense (of) humour anymore? Mr. President laughed before that statement was made,” Mr. Shehu said as the comments drew worldwide condemnation. “He was obviously throwing a banter.”
However, Buhari told the Deutsche Welle that his wife’s function is to look after him.
