The Republican candidate, Donald Trump, trailing behind his democratic opponent, Hilary Clinton in national polls and battleground states, failed to take advantage of the final presidential debate held at University of Nevada, Las Vegas to qualify himself for president of the United States of America.
With about three weeks to election day, Trump went into the debate desperately in need of a big performance to change the tide which is hugely against him, but he ended up delivering his usual vibes that appeals only to his base, which he does not need to convince anymore – because in any case they would vote for him.
Trump’s general performance instead of being impressive, was a complete disaster and his biggest gaffe was when he said he might not accept the results of the elections. He needed to show to the American people that he has the temperament to be president. And such statement did not help him. Neither would it damage Clinton. If at all, it does only harm to Trump as he was invariably telling his supporters, stay at home, don’t bother to vote since the election would be rigged any way.
Such outburst is unheard of in the history of modern American Presidential Election for one candidate to say that he would not accept the result. But he accepted the result of the Republican primaries, which he won. To now say he would not accept the outcome of the presidential election, which he thinks he would lose and more likely so, only tells the American people that he has no temperament for the top job. It is also an appalling lack of respect and trust in the American people and the political process.
In fact during the debate, Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Assad.
Even at the end of the debate, when he was asked to say in one minute what he wanted to tell Americans to support him, instead of summarising his agenda as Clinton did, he was still attacking Clinton and President Barack Obama.
60% of Americans do not think Trump has the temperament to be president and majority of Americans do not think he is qualified for the top job. So what he needed to do in the final debate was to convince them. Did he do that?
He had his good moments during the bitter clash, especially when he attacked his opponent over the deleted emails, but generally he failed to make a case capable of changing the momentum, which currently is with Clinton.
Checkpointcharley has scratched his head enough trying to see which group of voters Trump appealed to tonight in his bid to broaden his acceptance. He insulted middle class white women, he badly needed, when he called Clinton a nasty woman. He offended blacks and Latinos with his degrading remarks and he offended generally the American people by saying on a world stage that their political system is flawed.
A CNN instant poll after the debate said Hilary Clinton won the debate with 52%. It makes her the winner of all three presidential debates.
