The insecurity in Rivers State worsened on Sunday night as gunmen killed and beheaded two persons in Kong community in Khana Local Government Area of the State. The heads of the victims were taken away by the killers.
The gunmen, who stormed the community, had shot sporadically into the air, scaring people away.
Checkpointcharley understands that the perpetrators of this barbaric act were cult members, who went after members of a rival cult group.
The incident, which happened close to midnight caused enormous panic in the community as many residents scampered into nearby bush for safety.
The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Khana LGA, Mr. Baridam Suani, said, as usual, that his government would no longer tolerate the destruction of human lives in the area.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said it was a clash between two rival cult groups.
He said that the hoodlums stormed the community at about 11.30pm and engaged in a supremacy battle with a rival cult group. According to him two youths were killed during the clash.
“The police is on top of the situation as investigation is ongoing. The corpses have been deposited in the mortuary. Efforts are ongoing to bring the culprits to book,” he boasted.
It is however clear that the Nigeria Police has been ineffective in protecting the lives of Nigerians.
