President Muhammadu Buhari was again embarrassed by the Senate on Tuesday as members voted to reject his list of 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees. The senators asked for “re-submission and rejigging”.
This comes only days after the same Senate threw away Buhari’s request for approval to borrow about $30 billion.
The lawmakers’ resolution to return the list to the president was championed by the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, who said numerous petitions had trailed the nominations..
His motion to return the list was seconded by the Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio of Peoples Democratic Party.
President Buhari had on October 20 written the Senate, asking for confirmation of 46 non-career nominees as ambassadors.
Buhari’s failure to push minor things through the legislature controlled by his party is becoming embarrassing. Notwithstanding the fact that the nominations were made without consultation with governors who later demanded to be carried along in cases of appointments given to persons from their respective states.
Two nominees, Paullen Tallen and Usman Bugaje, had rejected their nominations.
However, the Senate had earlier during today’s plenary confirmed the 47 career ambassadorial nominees whose names were forwarded to the Senate in June.
