BREAKING: Senate Suspends Screening Of EFCC Chairman, Magu

Acting Chairman, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu.

After six months of delay, the Nigerian Senate on Thursday suspended the screening of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in July, through the vice president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, forwarded a letter to the National Assembly nominating Magu as the substantive Chairman of the anti-graft agency.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, had announced at plenary on Wednesday that the confirmation hearing would hold Thursday. But officials of the EFCC led by the acting Chairman, Mr. Magu, who were at the Senate this morning for the confirmation exercise, were shocked to find that the Red Chamber did not list the confirmation in the Order Paper for today.

Since the letter, seeking Magu’s confirmation, was read by the Senate Presiden, Bukola Saraki, on July 14, the Senate has been dragging its feet over the request.

It is widely believed that some Senators are blocking Mr. Magu’s confirmation.
