The trouble with leadership in Nigeria is that the government finds it needless to tell the citizens how their affairs are being run. This lack of accountability is the hallmark of fascism, notwithstanding the pretence that there is democracy.
With the Nigerian government not telling Nigerians what is going on with the famous Abacha loot, it has now being revealed that the Federal Government resolved to pay the Government of Switzerland $79m (N25.2bn) commission for the recovery of almost $400m (N128bn) looted by the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha.
This shocker was dropped on Friday by the Chairman of the Civil Society Network Against Corruption, Mr. Olanrewaju Suraj during a seminar to commemorate the 2016 International Anti-Corruption Day in Abuja.
Suraj, who was a member of a panel of discussants, said the original figure that was meant to be returned to Nigeria was about $400m, adding that the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari had secretly agreed to forfeit $79m as part of negotiations.
He said, “Unfortunately, the government goes to beg countries to get our money back rather than making demands, we appeal for the money and beg them to return it. We are fed with half information such that we even assume that we actually recover the amount stolen.
“I had a very funny experience and it is still ongoing. The $321m that the Swiss Government is meant to return to Nigeria, we discovered three weeks ago that the original money was about $400m. The legal process in Switzerland actually charged the Nigerian Government about $79m and that is why we are receiving $321m.
“The $321m is now to be returned to Nigeria with the condition that the World Bank will monitor how the funds will be spent. I cannot imagine anything more insulting.”
CHECKPOINTCHARLEY finds the whole arrangement silly. In fact it is Switzerland that ought to pay Nigeria interest for all the years it had the huge money at its disposal. Also, how can a country, a small one for that matter, dictate to another country how to spend its money?
Instead of paying Nigeria compensation for unlawfully providing a safe haven, where Nigerian money, that was badly need at home, was stashed away, Switzerland is now demanding commission. Is this a joke or what?
The deduction is very outrageous and Nigerians should stand up and reject it. President Buhari must demand full repatriation, and without delay, too. And if Switzerland refuses or delays in complying, Nigeria should seek legal redress.

May the subsequent African leaders learn from this. As the rules of the financial norms bends when it suites the criminally tailored financial institutions. All golds and blocked funds, extorted form the Jews were made liquid to the proper owners, with all due compasations and an apology. But the rules has been changed, as third hand approach has been applied to a third world Country. Though first world currency being the cake.
