President Muhammadu Buhari has finally broken his silence and ended his inaction over the Southern Kaduna Genocide as he ordered decisive measures aimed at bringing an end to the recurring acts of violence and destruction in that part of Kaduna State.
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said this in a statement Thursday night.
Shehu disclosed that on the directive of the president, the Inspector-General of Police was in the region on Saturday and Sunday to assess the situation.
He said in addition to the conventional policemen deployed in the area, a squadron of mobile policemen is now stationed there.
He added, “the Nigerian army is also in the process of setting up two battalions in Southern Kaduna while the military continues to carry out air surveillance across flash points of the area.”
According to him, Buhari has “directed the National Emergency Management Agency to carry out a joint assessment of the situation with the sister agency in Kaduna to determine the level of response required for urgent aid to the victims of the violence.”
Shehu believes these measures would soon ensure the return of normalcy to the region, while the Kaduna State government continues its peace building efforts.
The spokesman revealed that President Buhari had, once again, sent condolences to the people of Southern Kaduna, who had lost loved ones in the recent violence.
Nigerians had been outraged by Buhari’s silence and inaction over the killings in Southern Kaduna. Especially when the president found it expedient to send a video message to the Bauchi people over the postponement of his planned trip to their state, when the same president has failed to send a word of comfort to the people of Southern Kaduna.
