The Nigerian Senate has set the stage for a showdown with a defiant Comptroller of Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali, as Senators rejected his flimsy excuse on why he would not before them on Wednesday as summoned.

Mr. Ali had on Tuesday informed the Senate that he would not honour its invitation due to an NCS meeting scheduled for the same day.

However, senators rejected his excuse. Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan said his excuse was not acceptable.

“The integrity of the Senate is being tested,” said James Manager, PDP-Delta.

Distinguished Senators approved a vote called by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to reject Mr. Ali’s letter, and therefore mandated him “to appear in uniform tomorrow (Wednesday as scheduled) by 10:30 AM“.

The Senate wants Ali to explain the Customs’ planned clampdown on vehicles that have no duty clearance.

Mr. Ali, a retired colonel of the Nigerian Army, was appointed Customs Boss in 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari from outside the service.
