Faced with imminent political disaster, a jittery President Donalp Trump has at the last minute on Friday asked House Speaker, Paul Ryan to stop the vote on the Health Care Bill – his first attempt at legislation.
His request came after the speaker informed him in a meeting at the White House, minutes before the much publicized vote, that the Republicans did not have enough votes to push the bill through.
President Trump had demanded a vote on the bill, aiming to repeal and repeal Obamacare on Thursday, despite the fact that he knew that there were not enough votes.
He had termed it a do-or die vote, failing to pass would mean that he would move on and let Obamacare stay.
But after calculating the damage a no-vote would mean to his presidency, Trump called off his bluff, begging Ryan to pull out the vote.
In any case, political watchers see this as a political defeat for Trump – he could not get a deal to ram through congress his first attempt at legislation. It is a monumental failure for the Republicans and the Trump White House.
To repeal Obamacare was the key Republican campaign promise during the November Presidential Election.
