Mr. El-Rufai
Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai on Thursday continued his clampdown on free speech as he ordered the arrest of Mr. Midat Joseph, a Kaduna based correspondent of Leadership newspapers.
Mr. Joseph was reportedly arrested by security operatives in his house in the early hours of Thursday on the orders of the governor.
The journalist now in detention in Kaduna was said to have published a report considered critical of the state government.
This brings to six, the number of journalists arrested on the orders of the state governor, who is close to President Muhammadu Buhari, since his assumption of office in May 2015.
El-Rufai’s Chief Press Secretary, who was called for confirmation, switched off his phone in an apparent bid to dodge the avalanche of calls over the oppressive action of his principal.
El-Rufai is a controversial Nigerian governor. Many accuse him of siding with Fulani herdsmen in the Southern Kaduna killings.
