Christian Benteke, once rejected by Coach Jurgen Klopp, came back on Sunday to Anfield to take his pound of flesh, scoring twice to help his new club Crystal Palace stun Liverpool 2-1 and endanger the Reds’ direct Champions League qualification ambition.
It was also a big boost to Palace’s fight against relegation. Benteke cancelled Philippe Coutinho’s fantastic opener for the Reds and turn the game on its head with the winner sixteen minutes from time.
Before the coming of Klopp, Liverpool had paid £32m for Benteke when they signed him from Aston Villa in 2015 but sold him to Palace for £27m a year later after the former Borussia Dortmund coach banished him to the bench.
With goals in the 42nd and 74th minutes, the Belgian international took his revenge and made Klopp pay dearly for his decision. It also moved Palace seven points clear of the relegation zone.
