IFE CLASH: Court Orders Monarch, Pastor, Others Remanded In Prison

Aftermath of the Ile-Ife clash

An Osun State High Court, sitting in Osogbo, has ordered that suspects arrested in connection with the Ile-Ife clash  be remanded in prison pending the commencement of the hearing on June 14.

Justice Kudirat Akano gave this order in her ruling on Friday.

The order followed the application of the  prosecutor, who asked that the accused persons be remanded after pleading not guilty to the 14 counts of murder, armed robbery, arson and others preferred against them.

Justice Akano granted his applicationdespite objection from defence counsel, Muritala Agboola

The accused persons, among them a monarch and pastor, were arrested over their alleged involvement in the clash betwen Hausa/fulani people and their host community in Ile-Ife. The Mayhem that ensued claimed many lives and left many others injured.

Prominent Yoruba leaders, including fiery Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana, had condemned the arrest and parade of only offenders of Yoruba extraction by the Nigerian Police.

Up till now the Police, under a Notthern Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, have failed to satisfactorily explain to Nigerians why only Yoruba’s were arrested.
