It has been revealed that embattled US President Donald Trump asked sacked FBI director, James Comey to drop an investigation into the Russia ties of his former national security adviser, NSA, Michael Flynn. This was reported by the New York Times on Tuesday.
In the explosive report, the NY Times said the memo, given to the paper by one of the Comey’s associates at the FBI, showed that Mr. Trump urged former FBI boss to stop the investigation into Flynn’s Russian connections.
“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” the memo quotes Trump as saying, according to the newspaper.
“He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go,” Trump allegedly said.
Recall that Flynn had been sacked as NSA a day before Trump’s meeting with Comey over lying to the Vice President Mike Pence over his contacts with Russian.
President Trump shocked the world last week with the dismissal of the FBI chief – a man who was leading an investigation against him and his campaign – whether his campaign colluded with Russia to influence the November election his way.
That elicited loud accusations that the president was trying to obstruct justice.
Comey’s memo was part of a “paper trail” that he kept to document allegedly “improper” pressure by Trump over the FBI’s Russia investigation, the newspaper said.
However, the white House has denied the allegation, saying Trump did not press Comey to drop the Flynn probe.
A statement released by the White House said: “The president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn,” the official said.
“The president has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey.”
If the report turns out to be true, it is a clear case of obstruction of justice and therefore an impeachable offence.
Trump seems to be in trouble.
