Real Madrid beat Malaga 2-0 in the last match of the season at  Estadio La Rosaledato to win the La Liga title for the first time in five years.

It was Real Madrid’s 33rd Spanish league title.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema scored the needed goals to hand coach Zidenine Zidane his first La Liga title after taking over as Real manager mid way last season.

Real needed only a point against Malaga to clinch the title. And Ronaldo got Madrid off to a brilliant start, scoring just two minutes into the game for his 40th goal of the season. While Benzema made sure that his side left nothing to chance with a close-range finish 10 minutes into the second half.

It helped Real Madrid finish the season on top of the table with 93 points, three ahead of their rivals Barcelona, whose 4-2 crushing of Eibar at Camp Nou became meaningless.

“When you win the league it is a very important moment and for Real Madrid even more so because it is the best club in the world,” Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane told Spanish TV station Movistar.

“We had to return to winning this league.”
