The crisis rocking the Peopled Democratic party, PDP deepened on Monday as the Nigerian Supreme Court struck out the application of its embattled National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, seeking to stop the party’s appeal against him.
Nigeria’s highest court, led by Justice Walter Onnoghen, therefore granted the appeal filed by the sacked Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party, Ahmed Makarfi on behalf of the PDP. The court then went ahead to fix May 25 as the date for hearing of Makarfi’s appeal.
Mr. Makarfi had approached the Supreme Court for relief, following the decision of the Court of appeal. But Mr. Sheriff, former Borno State Governor, in an application urged the court not to entertain Makarfi’s appeal. He had averred that the Caretaker Committee could not initiate legal proceedings in the name of the party, having been sacked by the appeal court.
However, after listening to both sides, the five-man justices led by the Chief Justice of the Federation, CJN, Onnoghen, allowed the appeal.
