The coroner mandated by Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State to probe the cause of death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke has said that drug overdose killed the politician, who died on April 23, 2017. The coroner, Mr. Olusegun Ayilara gave the verdict on Tuesday after about three weeks of investigations.
Mr. Ayilara ruled out poison as the cause of death as being speculated by the Adeleke family and angry Osun youths.
He said, “The high dose of sedatives and analgesics with the mode of administration caused aspiration which culminated in death.”
Ayilara stated that no trace of poison was found in Adeleke’s system according to the autopsy and toxicologist reports.
The coroner had summoned 15 witnesses including Mr. Alfred Aderibigbe, the nurse who treated Adeleke shortly before he died, the pathologist, who carried out the autopsy on the corpse of the late politician, Dr. Taiwo Solaja, as well as the Chief Medical Director of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Prof. Akeem Lasisi.
The siblings of the late Senator had refused to participate or support the inquest, accusing the state government of setting up the panel to arrive at a report that would favour them.
