The sit-at-home call made by pro-Biafra groups, the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been very effective in the Eastern part of Nigeria.

Videos have emerged showing deserted markets and roads in that part of the country.

Aba for instance, a city teeming with people and bubbling with business, looked like a ghost town on Tuesday. CHECKPOINTCHARLEY sources in Nnewi say the story was the same in the business town.

In Owerri and Enugu, reports have it that it looked like a public holiday in both state capitals. Both cities were largely deserted.

A drive through Douglas, the busiest road in Owerri, leaves one with the impression that residents have abandoned the city.

There were not many people in the streets, most businesses were closed and only few  vehicles moved around.

The pro-Biafra groups had on Monday, as a prelude staged a procession in Owerri, the Imo State capital, ahead of the May 30 sit-at-home.

The agitators are fighting for the actualization of the Republic of Biafra, 50 years after the end of a civil war that quenched that aspiration.
