The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has told Al-Jazeera on Tuesday in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Biafran war, that Igbos are demanding secession because of marginalization and the fact that Nigeria is not functioning well and can never function.
In a chat at his father’s house in Umuahia, Abia state with the news network, Mr. Kanu said “Nothing seems to be working in Nigeria. There is pain and hardship everywhere. What we’re fighting [for] is not self-determination for the sake of it. It’s because Nigeria is not functioning and can never function.”
This again is in breach of one of the bails conditions of the IPOB leader. Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court Abuja, while granting Kanu bail on health grounds, had barred him from granting media interviews, among other prohibitions.
Recall that Kanu had also on Saturday breached another of his bail condition when he addressed worshippers at the Jew Sabbath service in his hometown in Abia State, declaring that only death would stop him from actualizing Biafra.
But Mr. Kanu seems to be unperturbed. He said: “I don’t care. I can’t go outside to call for a press conference. I can’t go on Biafra Radio to broadcast. I can’t allow large [groups of] people to basically congregate outside to see me…it’s like asking me not to breathe,” he said.
“I’m not allowed to contest for the presidency of Nigeria because I’m Igbo. I’m not allowed to aspire to become the inspector general of police because I’m Igbo.
“I’m not allowed to become chief of army staff because I’m Igbo. What sort of stupid country is that? Why would any idiot want me to be in that sort of country?” he asked.
On Tuesday, Southeast Nigeria was shut down due to IPOB’s the sit-at-home order. If it were a referendum, it simply means that Igbos would easily vote to leave the Nigerian union.
