Melaye’s Exit From Senate Draws Near As INEC Receives Signatures On Recall Of The Senator Living In Alternate Reality

Dino Melaye; gazing at the exit from where he may soon bid the Nigerian Senate an inglorious goodbye

The move to recall the Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye took a final turn on Wednesday as the Independent National Electoral Commission received signatures of about 188,588 voters in Kogi West Senatorial District, demanding the recall of Mr. Melaye from the Senate.

Six bags, which contained the signatures of 52.3 percent of the electorates from the zone and other petitions, were submitted to the Commission in Abuja, the Punch reports.

The law requires 50 per cent of voters to sign to recall a lawmaker.

With this development, it now appears that Senator Melaye is living in alternate reality, having boasted that move, which he alleged was being sponsored by Kogi Governor Yahya Bello, would fail.

CHECKPOINTCHARLEY had reported that a total of 188, 580, electorate from Kogi West have signed the recall register of Senator Dino Melaye. This depicts that 52.3% of his constituents have passed a vote of no confidence on him. This is well above the constitutional benchmark of 51.1% needed to recall a serving senator.

Mr. Melaye’s times in the Nigerian Senate have been turbulent. The vocal senator, who is a staunch ally of Senate President Bukola Saraki, was recently accused of not graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) as he had claimed. However, the matter was finally settled when the school ultimately confirmed that he graduated from the department of Geography with a third class. Though many people went away thinking that the university officials may have compromised.

If the recall goes through as expected, it would be an inglorious exit and a political obituary for a man, who has the ambition of becoming the president of Nigeria.
